Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia- A great word in the history of medicine. 'An' in Greek means 'without' and asthesis means sensation. So anaesthesia means without sensation including pain. Pain is the most discomforting feature for a human-being though pain is a warning sign to protect the parts of body.

Some of the ailments need surgery to cure. Surgery is the painful procedure. To alleviate pain we need pain killers. Anaesthetic drugs block pain sensation to reach the brain which recognize the pain sensation. So the surgeon do the surgery comfortably as the patient doesn't feel the pain.  ............

Besides alleviate pain surgeons need immobilization of patients during surgery. To immobilize the patient there are drugs to relax the muscles called muscle relaxants which have no anaesthetic effect. Some anaesthetic drugs cause amnesia(loss of remembrance) so that the patient could not remember the unpleasant happenings whether physical or mental as it would be more torture to remember the actual perception. The most important thing is reversibility of every action of drugs given during the anaesthetic procedure. I the modern anaesthesia these effects are produced by multiple drugs. And these drugs are  hypnotics, sedatives, paralytics and analgesics.

The anaesthetic procedure may be local anaesthesia(reversible lack of awareness of a part) or general anaesthesia(reversible total loss of awareness).
